Opera Profu' Atomic

John Adams, compozitor de opere contemporane, pune la cale versiunea operatica a vietii si aventurilor socio-politico-personale ale lui Robert Oppenheimer, in opera Profu' Atomic (The Atomic Doctor).

Citat din articolul dedicat de Wired Magazine evenimentului:

"Born in New England and schooled at Harvard, Adams moved to Haight-Ashbury in 1971 at the age of 24. He made the trip in a Volks-wagen bug and, by his own admission, arrived with the hackneyed idea that California was the place to find his voice. He did not at first - his music mostly resembled the chance compositions of John Cage - and only after he'd acknowledged his enjoyment of old-fashioned melody did he make his way through the elementary particles of minimalism to find a sound he actually wished to hear played.

By the '80s, his music reflected influences as diverse as John Philip Sousa, Liberace, and the Supremes, which caused some critics to dismiss him as a postmodernist and others to embrace him for that very reason. The critical whiplash was good training for the first major controversy of his career, which also happened to be his first opera: Even before its Houston premiere in 1987, Nixon in China was vilified in a dozen national newspapers and mocked by Tom Brokaw."
